Phone Calls -- Keeping the American Dream Afloat

Years ago, I bought into the “American Dream” and believed that if I worked hard enough -- Severance Tax Kills American Dream resized 600  life’s possibilities would be endless. I grew up thinking I not only should, but could get a job that I loved and also paid the bills (cute dream, right?)

Today, we don’t exactly throw around phrases like “love what you do” or “endless job possibilities”. It’s more like, “take what you can get”  and “be grateful for any job”  -- that is, if you even have a job. It’s certainly no secret that the US job market is struggling with an unemployment rate of 7.9%. Between that ugly unemployment statistic coupled with the Presidential election going on TODAY, the U.S. job market is one of America’s most discussed and debated “hot topics”.

But here’s something you maybe don’t know... according to the American Teleservices Association, nearly 4% of working population in the US are employed by call centers. That's over 5 million people that are employed by the industry - how do you like that statistic?!

Not only do call centers offer jobs to Americans, but the explosive growth in mobile is creating a need for more call centers to receive and handle the growing number of incoming calls.

BIA/Kelsey reported that because consumers are increasingly conducting searches via their smartphones, brands are increasing their budgets to drive calls from mobile ads. The report, “Call-Based Ads: Eliminating the Unknown from Advertising,” predicts that growth in mobile penetration, combined with advances in the analytics which track the effectiveness of call based ads (cough, cough, technology like RingRevenue’s) the call-based ad market will grow significantly over the next year.

According to the report, in 2011, United States businesses received more than 3 times (!) the amount of calls per month from mobile than from web search. By next year, the total volume of calls from mobile is expected to more than double.  More calls not only means the creation of more call center jobs, but also means a more profitable business, which creates the need and supplies the funds for company expansion to manage the heavier workload!

Speaking of company expansion...RingRevenue has received feedback from successful partners saying that because our technology is helping them to drive so much call volume their way, they’re needing to staff up and expand their call centers (cha-ching). And they’re not the only ones in need of more, capable employees. In just the last 3 months, RingRevenue has grown our company by nearly 20% - and we’re still growing! While my description of what has become of our beloved “American Dream” was slightly grim, it was certainly not to imply that it no longer exists. The growing success of call-marketing and the growing number of companies profiting from it’s success helps take us one step closer to restoring the "American Dream" as we know it. It is very interesting that this article specifically mentions "more call centers," as one of the first promises of the web was that we would all save money by automating everything and eliminating call centers -- I think that myth is finally dying.

And it's more than call centers, it's about talking to someone -- humans like to talk to real people and ask questions.

We're crediting mobile with all the calling, but calling never went away... we just discouraged it for 10+ years. The iPhone just made it cool to call again.

It's exciting to see companies like RingRevenue drawing attention to the role of the phones - not just mobile searches, but person-to-person calls, from mobile and desktop web activity alike.

My research with clients shows ROI from advertising is typically from 30-70% of total ROI... and it's rarely counted at all!

Cheers -- looking fwd to more from you!
